About Us

Established in 1907, Monrovia Farm is a Virginia Century Farm located in the historic Northern Neck of Westmoreland County, near Colonial Beach, Virginia. Monrovia Farm is next-door to the birthplace of our 5th United States President, James Monroe, and was once a part of the original 2,500 acre Monroe estate.
Monrovia Farm is owned and operated by H. Shirley Powell, his wife, Joan, and their oldest daughter, Cathy Powell Cavender, and her husband, James Andrew (Andy) Cavender, Jr. Fourth generation farmers, the Powell family is dedicated to humane livestock management practices to keep their Angus cattle herd stress free, healthy, and happy.
Everything the cattle eat is grown locally. Feeder calves are grass fed on Monrovia Farm pastures, orchard grass, and alfalfa hay and grain finished on homegrown corn and barley. Grain crops are rotated each season to meet the needs of the cattle operation, and to practice good stewardship of the land through environmentally sound farming methods. All fields are continuous no-till, as reducing runoff into nearby water sources, improving soil nutrient retention, and limiting erosion is vital to the sustainability of the farm.
All natural Monrovia Farm beef cattle receive no growth hormones, steroids, or animal by-products. All cattle are individually inspected by a certified grader and chosen for harvest at an age and finish weight that optimizes taste, tenderness, and marbling. Custom processed at USDA facilities, Monrovia Farm beef is dry aged a minimum of 10-14 days
